    I'd stick with MP4 (H.264 AAC) for longterm compatibility. You could also rip an ISO image for 1:1 preservation but not really great for playback or editing. I'd probably use both.

    Avoid AVI, WMV, MOV and DIVX/XVID

    I use 2-pass VBR processing for best quality in smallest file (though takes longer to render).

    I'm also a fan of the TMPGE line of editors, particularly if you have a newer NVidia graphics card. I'd avoid Adobe products as they are massive overkill with a learning curve to match (although Premier Elements isn't horrible).

    I'm in the process of converting old Family DVD's to digital for preservation.

    There are so many video formats...what format do you recommend?

    Any recommendation for video editor...to cut and splice?
