Is Silver Efex still available? If not what would be the equivalent?

I'll admit it: Silver Efex is better than I am. I twiddle with adjustments all afternoon and get something nice. Or I can click the Silver Efex button and WOW!

But what I don't actually understand is what/why/how it's doing it. I can't even manually replicate the effect. So what exactly is it doing?

Yes, it's remapping tones, and yes it has stored profiles. But how is it making the actual adjustments, and what would those look like as a curve?

Of course, like HDR and many other filters there is now a Silver Efex "look". It is overexposed (yes, pun intended). But that's a matter of taste and restraint, not technology. And this is a technology question.
