  • Plug-In: FFT returns mostly transparent image

    Hi guys,
I just found out about this forum and it looks like it's exactly what I was looking for.
While trying to recover an old half-tone image, I got it to look half decent and then hit a wall in the shape of a pattern all across the image.
I heard about FFT years ago but it's the first time I ever needed to actually try it out.
I followed the instructions. made sure to keep in mind the size limitations, but no matter what I do, I always end up with a mostly transparent image.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

    p.s
Using the latest Photoshop CC on a Win 10 machine.

You must first make sure that you are working on a flattened image no other layers. Right click over layer and select Flatten. You should now have just one layer with the name Background. Work on this and you should be good to go

Thanks Tony, that did the trick!

and I must say, it works better than expected...

      Thanks again!

I had exactly the same problem.
It turns out that it does indeed work pretty well when applying it on the background. But I had no problems having other layers above it in the image, like the original which I applies with Color mode.
        Works great :-)
Had to edit the red channel though, and not the green, as said other places.
And I did get some faint horizontal lines at the top and bottom.
I also found that it is a good idea to do any clone/patch retouching before removing the paper texture...

          FFT problem. Some idea?
          by Florin
Hi everybody. I have again one of these damaged picture to retouch. It has a global texture which must be removed so I used very carefuly the FFT filter, like always I'm doing. However, the final resoult still presents some horizontal line patterns as you can see in the attached sample. I did this 3...

Applying FFT Filter - Problems with IFFT
          by SPR
Trying to remove print texture from an old photo (image 1). Applying FFT and brushing out white stars in red channel (image 2) Applying IFFT to RGB yields black border around objects in print. What am I doing wrong?

          Thank for help!...

          FFT making transparent images
          by Habanero
Hi everyone! Photo restoration is a hobby of mine, so I'm happy I found this place. I've been restoring some old photos of a family friend and thought to try the FFT filter on the harsh texture of the paper. Come to find out FFT only works on patterned texture, not frog skin texture. It's kind of charming...

Using the FFT filter to remove photo paper texture
          by Gerald McClaren
Hi! Can someone please explain to me in the thread "Using the FFT filter to remove photographic paper texture", in the section "Put the colours back".
Slide, with shift pressed (to align), your (now un-textured) luminosity back layer on top of the original(that's the one we...

          Tricky FFT
          by yardkat
          Hello everyone,
I'm having some difficulty with an image from which I wish to remove texture. I've tried ImageJ, Image Analyzer, and the FFT PS plugin, and the result is the same with all three. It processes the image fine, but when I zoom in on the FFT (the cross and stars thing) there are...
