  • How to reduce PS file size (old trick)?

Can anyone remember the old PhotoShop 6 (undocumented) trick to reduce file size? It was something very quick, easy, clever, and simple like saving the file with a different name, creating a new filename, and reopening it. (But, of course, that is not it.) Suddenly, the overgrown file would be rid of excess bloat accumulated from numerous saves. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is the 'trick' you mean. If you add a new blank layer and fill with white to the top of your layer stack you will shave the final file size.

Tried this to confirm with a 215 Mb file after adding new layer set to white file size 195 Mb approx. You will loose the ability to view your psd thumbnail as it will be white

Thanks for the fast reply. That was very interesting as it stripped a 234,000K file down to 220,000K. The "File save & reopen trick" I want to find cuts the file to half or less of its bloated size. Does anyone else know?

If you switch off the photoshop layer visability it will reduced the file size considerably.

          by mama alligator
I've been trying to post new entries but three or four times now I get a message that the file is too big.
According to the Image Size reading on my Photoshop 6.0.
the one I just tried to upload said it was 1.71kb. Others that didn't go through were all under the 200kb limit.

Jpg: Small Size is Increased when Opened
          by ylwdog
I have a Photoshop file that I saved out from a psd format to 194K in a jpg format file.
Reading the properties of the file show 194k, when I open it in Photoshop it blows it up to 34.5mb.
          A) Curious what is going on
          B) Is it possible to have Photoshop open the jpg file as the...

          by LunaLuna
          Hi everyone,

I client sent me a tif file for a few fixes. I worked on it with Photoshop and saved again as tif.

The original tif file is 67 MB and the one I saved after fixing is only 19Mb.
          I don't understand why that much difference…
