  • PSE3 and web colour problems in SRGB

I have a problem that when I post to web the colours I see in any browser look more washed out than I see for the same image in PSE3 or Lightroom. I should add straight away that the image is sRGB and I have a calibrated monitor using a Spyder2. I have struggled with this problem for weeks.

In brief if I take an sRGB jpeg converted in either PSE3 or Lightroom and Save for web I get a preview pane with the original (?) on the left and the web version on the right. They look identical. However if I move the preview pane over to reveal the actual original underneath in PSE3 it has different colours (blues and reds most noticeably different).

Both images in Save for Web preview pane are more washed out.

And yes the original is 100% definitely sRGB as checked by previously opening Save As and checking the ICC profile

I have a freshly adjusted monitor with my Sypder2 and have PSE3 set to Limited Colour Management (sRGB working colour space 'optimised for the Web').

Does anyone else see such a colour shift when they Save for Web. Is it inevitable or am I doing something wrong? Is thare a solution in PSE3 or Hidden Elements.

    Many thanks,

    Paul

PS If I Save As I get the same colour shift when I actually look at the image in a browser as I see when I Save for Web. And all sRGB. Indeed this has been my normal workflow. It's just that Save for Web shows the problem in PSE3 itself when it emulates the view through a browser.

    hi,
First I am NOOO authority on colors .. smile.. I am still learning photoshop and got a long way to go..smile... however.. I first encountered the issue years ago with my older graphic programs... they specifically addressed on how how a graphic to be used , if it was going to be for printing or for display in a browser...!!!!! at that time it was strongly recommended to use the Netscape standard safe colors if displaying in browsers....

In most cases it seems they were primarily addressing 256 color pallette but at the same they were inferring your larger pallettes...

Since it been awhile, I went back and take a look at what new material out there addressing displaying graphics in browsers.. there a lot of sites... this one I think shows the different issues and maybe answer some of the questions.... but there a lot of websites that deals with this...

And the experts on here can do a better job of explaining...

      Thanks Jerry,

I asked the same question on several forums (fora??) and also tagged on the end of a similar thread which developed into a pretty interesting discussion of this issue. I case you are interested I attach the link...

The results you are getting sound more like an AdobeRGB profiling issue than an sRGB. One of the things you really need to work through is a color management system. Even with all I know about profiling and color management I pretty much stick to sRGB. Perhaps you read that in my books and maybe that is why you are making the choices you have made.

What I'd really like to see is one of our files. I have a feeling that eventhough you feel you are using sRGB, the profiles are not acting that way. if we can confirm that, then we can get the problem worked out.

ZIP up an original file and send it to me:

Also, an example of where your images have posed to the web might be helpful.
