    Second for Bill Bryson

I'll second Bryson for non-fiction easy reading, intellectual entertainment. My wife and I re-read several of his books (in particular A Walk in the Woods) every holiday season just to laugh our butts off and decompress.

    His latest tome, "A...

  • I would quote her back a standard charge. If you spend 1/2 hour on a photo like your example and normally charge $60/hr, you could mention that and put in a 10% discount for regular work. Any "real" photographer would know that $4/image is completely ridiculous. Be diplomatic, but be prepared...

    Printing paper

Many (if not most) customers will have personal preferences regarding paper finish, so be sure to ask before you print, as printing is expensive regardless whether you print at home or send it out. You don't want to have to do it twice.

    If they don't know...

    Business plans

Business policies are good things to figure out. To run any business you need to know your policies on returns, hours of operation, and all the rest.

To run a successful business, though, you really need to go through the exercise of creating a business...

    Wipe hard drive?

Just a thought... are you trying to preserve the data on this machine? If you simply want a useful computer, by far the most complete method for getting rid of adware, spyware, trojans, and the rest is to completely wipe the system hard drive and reinstall the operating...

    Use a 2nd hard drive

For considerably less than the cost of a DVD burner, you can purchase a 2nd hard drive and install it yourself. Use it to very simply make a copy of all the data on your existing hard drive.

Even better, purchase a program like Norton Ghost and use...

Wow, thanks very much to all for the advice.

Just to clarify---I was going to offer free travel *in town*, with travel out of town being negotiable. Ie, for a large job I might offer travel to the nearby town, but for a small job I might charge them for the time. As it happens, my business...

    What services do you provide?

I have been thinking for a while about hanging out my shingle as a restorer, with some scanning as well. I don't want to become a "scan shop", as I don't have pro-level equipment nor the will to use it, but doing an album or two with some basic tonal adjustments and spot cleanup would be...

    Wow

Hard to believe this kind of job would be bid overseas.

No way in *(&)$ would I send the only copies of my genealogical photos to some shop thousands of miles away. I wouldn't do that even if the shop were still in the US. In fact it is one of the reasons I...

  • Sounds very interesting---my darkroom knowledge is very minimal. I hadn't thought of rewashing. Since this is cheapo 110 I am worried about losing the emulsion, but it is definitely worth a shot, thanks for replying!

    Scanning water-damaged negatives

    Hi all

One of my latest projects is to scan a huge number of family negatives. These are mostly 110 (and some disc film, ugh!). The challenging part is that these were in a basement that flooded about 15 years ago.

Happily, most of the negatives look okay under a loupe,...

  • Try loading the result into Photoshop and use the Equalize command. I think you may be surprised at the results.

If you are still getting a completely blank document, make sure you don't have the scanner set to scan with a transparency adapter. *Any* scanner will have varying results...

  • Press Down

Posted below are before and after shots of my Epson 3170. The first was by laying a sheet of heavyweight matte paper and hitting the button. The second was augmented by pressing down on the lid while scanning, as I noticed the first time that the dark spot was caused by a...

    In-scanner corrections, vs. postprocessing

Forgot to reply about in-scanner color manipulation vs. postprocessing.

I should note at first that this mostly applies to color scanning and my scans are almost all in black and white, so for my purposes it doesn't appreciably...
