Do learn masking, but try to nail down not just the expected masking routines, but get down and dirty with apply image and calculations, learn how to mask based on luminosity and hue. The amount of time a good mask can save and the work it also...
If you don't already get an independent portfolio site, perhaps think about getting an agent if you think that would be the way to to (pros and cons) and don't forget to shamelessly market yourself to everyone that you already have in your address book,...
What genf said. I would say it is a bit of a lazy retouch. clone marks are still visible, no discernible d&b, the hair could do with some work for strays and the like, the lips should also be retouched and the eyes need more work too.
My experience says that a lot of photographers that do family portraits and wedding shoots, once they receive the price asked for ownership of images (to sell the rights in effect), they are happy to relinquish rights and therefore retouching....
I would like to say I had some method, but as you mention, it was just a visual estimate and that background is from a stock site, I was not sure about the lighting, so I just picked a background with some of the characteristics of the lighting ...
